True productivity requires uninterrupted focus. In this era of emails, text messages, IMs, social media, etc., we’re constantly bombarded with “pings” that can draw our attention away from our work. This poses a serious problem from a productivity perspective.
So how do we avoid the temptation to “switch-task”? (Switch-tasking is a spin-off of multi-tasking in which focus is shifted from one thing to another). According to an article published recently on the Forbes Leadership blog, it’s as simple as making it a goal to focus your attention on a single task and to ignore everything else.
This is easier said than done; however, the best way to start is to force yourself to start. Think about ways to avoid losing focus – silence your text messages, turn off your email pop-up notifications, close your door and put on some headphones while you work. Get creative with it, test it out, and see what works best for you. Ultimately, it all comes down to willpower. If you look at the stats in the article about the detrimental effect of switch-tasking on productivity, I think you’ll be more inclined to allocate some of your willpower to change the way you work!
