When does your workday end? For many of us, particularly in this industry, there is no “end” to the workday. We let our workload determine our schedules. Unfortunately, this practice is a slippery slope that can ultimately be detrimental to our personal lives (and our productivity).
According to an article published this week on the LifeHacker blog, one of the best ways to prevent your work time from slipping into your personal time is to set a “cap” each day. Choose one task that is relatively quick and easy and schedule it as your last task of the day. If the end of the day is approaching and you haven’t yet started working on it, pause your other work and switch to your “cap” task – and then call it a day.
Once you get in the habit of setting a cap each day, you’ll likely find yourself working more efficiently throughout the day. Why? Because you know that there’s a hard stop to your workday, and anything that is left undone will have to wait for another day.
